Los Angeles Center of Photography (formerly The Julia Dean Photo Workshops) for 22 years.
Currently, she is the director of The L.A. Project, an organization that aims to nurture and

Los Angeles.
After earning her B.S. degree in photography at the Rochester Institute of Technology, Dean
began her career as an apprentice to pioneering photographer Berenice Abbott, followed by work
as a photo editor for the Associated Press. Her extensive teaching experience spans 42 years at
varied universities and educational institutions, including the University of Nebraska, Santa Fe
Workshops, Maine Photographic Workshops, the Los Angeles Center of Photography and
Oxford University. She currently teaches at Santa Monica College, the Leica Akademie, and her
own classes through The L.A. Project.
Later, Dean earned an MA in Journalism at the University of Nebraska. She has been
interviewed on podcasts, TV, and radio, and her work has been published in many magazines,
blogs, and books. She is also the author/photographer of the award-winning children’s book, A
Year on Monhegan Island, published by Houghton Mifflin Co. She is about to publish two “book
end” memoirs: The Last Apprentice, her year with Berenice Abbott, and Racing for Life, the
story of her life and photographic endeavors for the past 50 years.
